SUMMARY:Crown Ruler + Tribe Soundsystem pres. Timmy Regisford (NYC / The Shelter)
LOCATION:The Evelyn Hotel\, 351 Brunswick St\; Fitzroy\, VIC 3065\; Australia\, Melbourne
DESCRIPTION:Crown Ruler & Tribe Sound System present Timmy Regisford (NYC / Club Shelter)\n\nFollowing our recent warehouse session with Kai Alcé & Lovie\, Crown Ruler and Tribe Sound System reunite\, this time in conjunction with In The Moment Radio as part of "The Evelyn Reimagined" - a month-long September series exploring dance\, sound and community.\n\nFor this special edition\, we welcome one of house music's true masters.\n\nSome DJs play records. Timmy Regisford has spent a lifetime keeping faith with the dancefloor.\n\nLovingly regarded simply as "The Maestro"\, Timmy is\, by every measure\, the dancer's DJ.\n\nAcross four decades\, he has quietly shaped the language of modern dance music through marathon sets\, fearless musical programming and the creation of the legendary Club Shelter in New York City. With understated sophistication\, Regisford lays bare the primal power of music and dance\, free from pretence or distraction. He is one of the great custodians of Black music.\n\nTime has a habit of dissolving with Timmy at the helm. In an era chasing instant gratification\, he builds journeys. His extended sets weave together soul\, gospel\, disco\, jazz\, Afro rhythms and house into something that feels less like a nightclub and more like a spiritual communion.\n\nThat philosophy was forged at The Shelter\, founded in 1991 following the closure of Paradise Garage. More than simply another nightclub\, Shelter became the spiritual heartbeat of New York's underground - a weekly pilgrimage where house music reclaimed its deepest purpose. Gospel met disco. Jazz embraced Afrobeat. Strangers became family.\n\nFor more than three decades\, it stood as a sanctuary where generations of dancers\, irrespective of race\, sexuality or background\, gathered in pursuit of something increasingly rare: genuine communion. Its influence continues to echo through dancefloors across the world.\n\nAway from the booth\, Regisford held senior A&R roles at Atlantic\, MCA and Motown\, helping shape the careers of emerging artists while working alongside some of contemporary R&B's most influential artists. Equally at home in boardrooms and basements\, his career has bridged commercial music and underground culture in a way few figures have ever managed.\n\nHis relationship with the Kuti family saw him license Fela Kuti's catalogue to Motown\, sign Femi Kuti and executive produce Femi's first releases for the legendary label. Alongside that sits an extraordinary remix and production catalogue\, reimagining the music of Luther Vandross\, Mariah Carey\, Janet Jackson and Sade with the same unmistakable touch that has defined his DJ sets.\n\nRegisford continues to champion the beauty of patience\, trust and storytelling. His performances remind us that house music was never simply a soundtrack to nightlife - it remains a culture rooted in soul\, liberation and collective joy.\n\nJoining Timmy is Melbourne-based Zepherin Saint\, whose relationship with The Maestro spans years through releases on the legendary Tribe Records imprint. Their shared musical language has evolved over many years\, making this a fitting occasion as Timmy makes his first appearance on Tribe Sound System.\n\nZepherin will warm the floor before Timmy settles in for an extended set.\n\nTickets: https://ra.co/events/2495153
